Ancient Aliens Theory vs. Jung's Archetypes
Jan. 2011

Ancient Alien Theory
The History Channel has a program series it has titled 'Ancient Alien Theory'. The series thus far has a list of eight programs which supports the theory that it was aliens from other worlds that provided the knowledge if not the tools for the construction of 'earthy' ancient structures, including the pyramids of Egypt and South America as well as other mysterious places around the globe. In its program 'Gods and Aliens' it asks the question 'Could the demigods of mythology have been the offspring of alien and human unions?'. Its primary evidence is the imagery of strange beings found with the ancient structures as well as the similarity in structures thousands of miles apart and from unconnected cultures. How do we explain the 'similarities' unless something more intelligent than ancient man helped construct the structures?

Although I have not seen every program the hypothesis is it was aliens who were responsible for the unexplained, mysterious structures around the world. I can see why this is a popular program since anything that uses the word 'UFO/aliens' is a subject people will watch. It is a good story to tell, offering an explanation for something modern man has been unable do. It is entertaining if nothing else.

The problem is there is a more logical explanation for the similarities found at these structures. And it is from Jungian psyche, an 'earthly approach', that we will find the answer. I'll offer the 'archetypal' reasoning after the following opening paragraph from the History Channel that sets the stage for the 'alien' theory.

According to ancient alien theorists, extraterrestrials with superior knowledge of science and engineering landed on Earth thousands of years ago, sharing their expertise with early civilizations and forever changing the course of human history. But how did this concept develop, and is there any evidence to support it?.... read more

To be fair I have provided a video from the program to give you some idea how The History Channel approaches the subject of ancient aliens.

Counter Argument
Archetypes of the Collective Unconscious
My approach does not intend to counter all of the hypothesis presented by the program, just the similarities found in the imagery of 'alien deities' and how the structures could have been built. And why they were built. Parts of the hypothesis presented by the History Channel are a stretch, the association of aliens and the Third Reich being the one that sticks out. Other parts take great liberties in an attempt to support the argument of the ancient aliens theory. The 'Gods and Aliens' is the easiest to counter since the subject involves mythology. Having Joseph Campbell as the expert on mythology in my corner provides expertise that is impossible to counter, he being the authority when it comes to gods and myth.

Why did primitive man go to such lengths to describe and interpret the happenings in the natural world, for example the rising and setting of the sun, the phases of the moon, the seasons? Carl Jung believed that the events of nature were not simply put into fairy-tales and myths as a way of explaining them physically. Rather, the outer world was used to make sense of the inner. The collective unconscious was expressed through 'archetypes', universal thought-forms or mental images that influenced an individuals feelings and action.

The Collective Unconscious
The collective unconscious is a concept developed by psychoanalyst Carl Jung, consisting of an amalgamation of shared ideas said to be universal across humanity. Rather than being consciously understood and passed between individuals, or cultures, these ideas are instead said to be part of the unconscious mind, underlying the way people think and behave. Jung believed they were an inherited legacy of thousands of years of human society and culture. Jung's idea of the collective unconscious explains the many recurring themes in human mythology and symbolism.

According to the theory of the collective unconscious, there are certain universal archetypes familiar to all humanity that influence the way people interact with each other. They also play a role in mythology, and it is notable that some cultures have similar mythological themes even if they have no actual contact with each other. Likewise, symbolism in many cultures has surprising commonalities which are attributed to the collective unconscious.

Jung's archetypes of the collective unconscious explain why there are similar symbolic imagery as well as design at the various structures. The great pyramids of the world, Egypt's Great Pyramids at Giza, similar designed structures of the Olmec, Maya, Aztec and Inca civilizations, Latin American pyramids that include the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon at Teotihuacán, the Pyramid at Cholula and the Inca's great temple at Cuzco in Peru. All seem to have a singular mind in their construction yet they are 1000s of miles apart and from different cultures from different periods of time {but all being ancient in their age} with little possibility of a 'diffusion' or sharing of information. But if the singular mind is that of a collective knowledge or collective unconscious then it would explain the similarities. Mythologies around the world have shared similarities in many different aspects which were first explained in modern times by Adolf Bastian with his theory of 'Elementary Ideas' and the psychic unity of mankind. Jung took up this mantle to develop his concept of the archetypes of the collective unconscious. His hypothesis is the mental acts of all people everywhere on the planet are the products of physiological mechanisms characteristic of the human species {what today we might term the genetic loading on the organization and functioning of the human neuroendocrine syste}. Every human mind inherits a complement of species-specific 'elementary ideas', and hence the minds of all people, regardless of their race or culture, operate in the same way. Sounds very plausible, more so in my opinion than aliens from other worlds sharing their technology with ancients. Whereas the theories of Jung and Bastian have scientific evidence in their support, the theory of ancient aliens does not {other than what the History Channel promotes with their programming}.

What About the Images of UFOs and Aliens Found at These Ancient Structures?
According to archaeologists and scientists, Egyptian hieroglyphics show images of UFOs. Designs and imagery in the hieroglyphics were also found in Mexico in pottery and stonework. One scientist stated 'the UFO shapes are very technical in design and they have no place in the minds of very primitive people working in very crude circumstances.' Advanced astronomical, mathematical and geometrical knowledge, taught in schools today originated in ancient Egypt. Where did it come from? The Egyptians seemed to have a deep understanding of outer space. There are images of spirals in Egyptian hieroglyphics, meaning energy, galaxies, etc. There are also images of half human half animal creatures, as well as reptilian creatures. Some people think that those are images of extraterrestrials. Images in a 3,000 year old New Kingdom Temple in Egypt shows images of modern day helicopters, submarines, and what appears to be UFO’s on the ceiling.

Presented in the 1968 bestselling book Chariots of the Gods by Erich von Daniken, the theory of "ancient aliens" rocked people's beliefs in mankind's progress. Ancient cave drawings of strange creatures, remains of landing strips in Peru, and Indian texts that describe the "flying machines of the gods" were just a few of the odd archaeological artifacts cited by von Daniken as proof that ancient astronauts were well known to our ancestors....
Simply Some Crap

Answer
Today we have thousands of people who have 'witnessed' UFOs as well as aliens all over the world. All types of images of flying saucers and 'aliens' have been reported that depict everything from strange lights in the sky to actual descriptive alien 'beings'. In today's world, without sound evidence to support such sightings, these reports are just that. Unconfirmed reports. In ancient times such 'visions' or sightings would have been treated as a major event, a 'sign' from the gods and made a part of the cultural if not spiritual belief system. The tendency was to convey these images in what ever mode was in use at the time. Images of UFOs, Unidentifable Flying Objects, of alien beings in weird outfits, are not uncommon in the ancient world archaeological finds, as well as their myths. But like today the eyes sees what the mind makes it believe it wants to see. But unlike in modern times where such sightings are not news worthy, ancients thought them to be 'signs' from the gods, something real and treated them as such. The imagery I have seen presented by the History Channel, while often looking like real aliens, can be explained by the creative minds of ancient man. In the caves at Lascaux in France drawings of animals in strange forms are found that show how the ancients conveyed impressions to imagery. In their 1966 book Intelligent Life in the Universe astrophysicists I.S. Shklovski and Carl Sagan devote a chapter to arguments that scientists and historians should seriously consider the possibility that extraterrestrial contact occurred during recorded history. However, Shklovski and Sagan stressed that these ideas were speculative and unproven. And that is my point. There is no concrete evidence that prove extraterrestrials contact occurred or had any input to the design/construction of any ancient structure.

How Were the Ancient Structures Built?

My answer to this important question itself borders on speculation 'almost' as much as it does fact. But there is real evidence there was a knowledge by the ancients that did not require 'alien' intelligence to help build these great structures. Much of it is from a 'forgotten knowledge', the techniques that were used in the building of the pyramids as well as other mysterious structures around the world. We must never underestimate the ingenuity of man. Especially ancient man who had use his 'instincts' for survival. It is within the structure of the human mind we possess instinctive and intuitive qualities long forgotten because they are no longer required in modern times. But this information still remains in the psyche and is available for processing, taking intuitive and instinctive aspects and enhancing those abilities. I believe this is what the ancients possessed, and used, in constructing what we today find mysterious.

The Evidence

We will use the pyramids in Egypt. Lets start with the excavation sites. If you have been there, you will know that it looks pretty much like any other quarry you might see today, except there is obviously no machinery. At the quarry face there are blocks cut into the rock but not yet cut away. There are rough hewn blocks scattered around ready for transporting and on-site finishing. The entire quarry shows obvious signs of systematic development of cutting blocks out from the face and transporting them from site. The rough hewn free standing blocks show the scars of repeated chisel blows where they were chiseled out of the rock face. There is nothing in the manner of these blocks that is anything other than old fashioned quarry work using a mallet and chisel. Nowhere is there any sign of advanced technology having been employed, just the opposite. The blocks were hewn out of the rock-face by manual labour, the signs are unmistakable. The chisels used were made of copper, the hardest metal then available, but even they were only good for about 100 blows before blunting, even though limestone is relatively soft and easy to work compared to hard rock such as granite. As the chisels were blunted they were exchanged for re-sharpened ones, and the process was repeated with a team of blacksmiths constantly re-sharpening and tempering the chisels.

How were the blocks transported to the pyramids? By man power. The vast majority of the blocks weighed in the region of 2.5 tons and were transported on wooden sledges. They could of course have chosen any size for the blocks, but this must have been the optimum size, any bigger would probably have slowed them down. A team of men with ropes could drag the sledge across the clay floor, and this could be eased with a little water tipped in front of the runners helping the sledge to slide easier. It is estimated that it may have taken 10 years just to build the ramp from the quarry to the pyramids. In this manner all the blocks could be transported to the site of the pyramid without presenting any insurmountable challenges. So far no alien technology required, it could all be done by well organised teams of men, and a great deal of manual labour. During the time of the annual flooding of the Nile the stone blocks could have been floated to the site of the pyramids on rafts, making the task a lot easier.

As each successive layer was laid the ramp would need be heightened, and lengthened so as not to be too steep. Eventually this method would reach a limit where the size and construction of the ramp would be nearly as complex as the pyramid. The easiest way around this problem is to curve the ramp around the pyramid as the pyramid increased in height.

Better Possibilities
There are other possibilities, some with cited evidence, that better explains the construction of the pyramids and other ancient sites. In his documentary video Quest for the Lost Civilization Forgotten Knowledge writer Graham Hancock puts forth the theory that an ancient and intelligent lost civilization was responsible for creating these mysterious structures and ruins. I don't subscript to Hancock's theory per say but I do believe in the possibility of 'lost knowledge'. We can pretty much explain how heavy stones were moved and put into place but the mental facilities that Hancock addresses is something we have yet to determine. In another publication By Hancock, Fingerprints of the Gods, he concludes that in our distant past there were others who were very advanced technologically. It involves astronomical code that deals with the position of the stars over vast periods of time - a code that reveals the ancients knew far, far more than they are generally credited with. Traces of the same code appear in Egyptian myth, and it is to this desert land that Graham traveled, finding there haunting parallels in architecture and ritual to the New World sites they have just left behind. Graham: "From the mysterious sites of Tiahuanaco and Teotihuacan, to the enduring enigmatic Sphinx and pyramids of Egypt, the grandiose Nazca lines of Peru to the stark primal beauty of the Osireion at Abydos, this is a journey both around the globe and into the heart of the true prehistoric origins of man."

Could this journey involve more than what we know today, a knowledge once available to ancient man but since lost? Primal man used his senses {sight, sound, smell, taste and touch} as a means of survival. These senses within man today are not as enhanced as they were during the time of the 'caveman' because we no longer need them to survive a wild climate where we were not at the top of the food chain. They have been 'lost'. But have they been completely lost to the point we can not bring them up and use them as primitive man did? And if the primitive mind had 'lost' senses would there not be a possibility the brain had developed other 'knowledge' which also has been lost? This hypothesis does not seem to be any less of a possibility than the ancient aliens theory.

What about that sixth sense we have little use of, one that Jung wrote about that is just as real. It is the intuitive sense, a natural aspect of the human psyche. Intuition is the ability to literally reach in to others and assess and evaluate. It is your ability to sense things in your environment in a way that is vastly deeper than using sight, sound, smell, touch, or taste alone. Intuitiveness is something that can be enhanced, something that is seldom used by most yet can be heighten. I personally feel I am able to interpret dreams because I have developed a keen intuitive sense where I can recognize aspects within a dream that go beyond just cognizant reasoning. And my abilities with a basketball go well beyond any normal abilities {see my blog post Physical Fitness, Psychology & Wholeness }. I feel I am able to do things physically that I would not be able to do if not for the 'opening' up to that sixth sense, letting the natural senses take control. As with mental yoga the goal is to 'let go' and let the senses prevail. Shutting out the physical world and acknowldeging the internal. Add that to the physical/mental/spiritual of Kundalini yoga you them have system of physical and mental enhancement that is real, and verifiable.

I will end in stating my position by saying it is not that I do not believe in the possibility of aliens or UFOs. Of the billions of stars let alone planets in the universe there must be other 'intelligent' life out there somewhere. The possibility in the numbers alone suggest that probability. But have they visited us and did they give ancient man tools to use that we no longer know of. I would think in all of history of mankind we would have emperical evidence of aliens and UFOs if they had made contact with us. But all we have is speculation and theory. As with all concepts, they are not real until emperically proven. Jung has given us the 'archetypes', something that is viable and applicable. Ancient aliens makes a good documentary but where is the imperical evidence? I'll await those results before I accept or even deny the possibilities. As for Jung's archeypes, the intuitive mind, and the dream as a direct link to the unconscious, I have no doubt about those. My experiences are my 'emperical' evidence.
